Why Dogs Drag their Butts Across the Floor

Puppies and dogs can get sore bottoms. It sometimes causes them to scoot across the floor. Sometimes their anal glands need to be drained, but it can be caused by many different things and the problem is not always in the gland. Sometimes it is in the rectum or surrounding area. The problem can be very simple and not a big deal to life threatening. It can sometimes cause them to chew their tail and/or the area around their crotch.


The most common cause of a dog's urge to scoot across the floor is anal sac impaction. Anal sac impaction is when the anal glands do not empty on their own. There is no clear answer as to why this happens, but It can happen after a bout of loose stools. When it does you or your vet need to drain the sacs for the dog.
